GLBT DEMOCRATS HOLD EARLY STRAW POLL FOR DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATES FOR GOVERNOR...WHO WON?
ATLANTA - Atlanta Stonewall Democrats, Georgia’s largest Democratic LGBT organization, held a Straw Poll to gauge members’ preference in the Democratic Primary for Governor.
The poll was held during Stonewall’s February 11th Love Me, Love Me Not Valentine Party at the Phillip Rush Center in Atlanta. Candidates currently on the ballot included former Governor Roy Barnes, Attorney General Thurbert Baker, Ray City Mayor Carl Camon, former Secretary of State David Poythress and State House Minority Leader DuBose Porter. Here’s the results:
Barnes - 44
Poythress - 25
Porter - 13
Camon - 13
Undecided - 3
Baker - 2
Asked if he was shocked at the low number of Undecided members, Stonewall Board Chair Tim Cairl says “I’m not surprised at all. I think GLBT voters and our allies have been waiting for 8 years for a fair-minded Democratic Governor, and we’ve been watching this race from the beginning.” Says Cairl, “Georgia is definitely ready for a common-sense, practical and fair-minded Governor, and we are excited that we have a good field of candidates for 2010.”
Atlanta Stonewall Democrats members report several more upcoming events throughout 2010 to introduce both members and the general public to fair-minded Democratic candidates in local and state elections. The next major event is scheduled for April 30th, 2010, when Stonewall members will get a first-hand look at all the Democratic candidates who qualify for state house, senate and state-wide elections.
